New Drainage Solutions Prevent Flooding and Moisture Damage

Drew and Alexis live in a two story Queenslander home at Wights Mountain in Moreton Bay. They called in Slick N Co to identify and fix their flooding and water ingress issues. Our drainage solutions have addressed these issues and improved the amenity of their property.

What is Overland Flow?

The Wights Mountain property faced a range of drainage issues including overland flow, natural spring water, and underground water seepage from a neighbouring acreage property.

The overland flow was a concern because it can be more damaging to property and infrastructure than direct flooding. It occurs when water travels across the land after rainfall or rises to the surface from underground.

Water Management and Drainage Works

The Slick N Co team are master plumbers with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Our can-do attitude, extensive knowledge, and the right earthmoving equipment enabled us to deliver a tailored solution that met Drew and Alexis’ needs.

We successfully executed the drainage works with precision, ensuring all water was efficiently redirected to lower sections of the property.

French Drainage System

Slick N Co delivered a range of drainage solutions to address the flooding and water ingress issues.

First cab off the rank was the creation of an open French drain system with a 60 metre trench behind the house along the property boundary. This solution is designed to divert excess water to a lower paddock. We also constructed a natural open riverbed for controlled water dispersion.

French Drain Materials

Slick N Co used a range of quality products on this job:

  • PVC stormwater pipe was installed within the trench to divert high volumes of water during peak rain events
  • Stormwater pits were then strategically positioned to capture and manage surface water flow
  • Geotech fabric sheeting was laid throughout the trench to prevent soil infiltration and maintain drainage efficiency
  • A socked aggregate drain was installed alongside the stormwater pipework in the open trench. This solution allowed residual moisture to drain away while keeping the system breathable and functional
  • Drainage gravel, also known as crushed rock, was then laid as a free-draining base material for water dispersion and topped with blue metal spoils to create the dry creek bed

Breezeway Drainage Solution

Queenslanders have breezeways that allow natural cooling and airflow through and underneath the home. However, the breezeway area between Drew and Alexis’ home and the rear site cut was prone to flooding due to inadequate drainage, causing damage to the existing dwelling.

As a solution, Slick N Co installed stormwater pits and drainage to prevent water pooling in this area. We then connected the breezeway drainage system to the French drain, ensuring all collected water is safely redirected to lower areas of the property.

This work included installing stormwater pipe to efficiently transport excess water, and stormwater collection pits that are positioned to catch runoff and manage drainage flow.

Retaining Wall Drainage Upgrade

The final drainage issue to address was the upgrading of the retaining wall. This wall lacked proper drainage and was contributing to excessive water retention and potential structural issues.

Slick N Co excavated behind the wall to install core fluting and geo fabric sheeting for improved water management. These materials prevent soil from clogging the drainage system.

Perforated aggregate drainage pipe was installed to collect and transport excess groundwater. We then laid drain rock to encase the drainage system and to efficiently capture and redirect water away from the wall. To ensure all excess water is channelled away we then connected the retaining wall drainage system to the French drain.

Prevent Flooding and Moisture Damage

Slick N Co is committed to delivering high-quality, effective drainage solutions that stand the test of time. The combination of open trench drainage, structured stormwater pits, and reinforced retaining wall drainage has provided a sustainable, long-term solution tailored to the client’s needs.

The property is now protected with the drainage systems that capture, divert, and disperse excess water, preventing future flooding and moisture-related damage.
